FCPS 2021-22 School Year Calendar

Spring Health and Safety

Fairfax County has transitioned to medium community level and COVID-19 cases and outbreaks are increasing in schools, especially elementary schools. Please remind families, staff, and students that we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves from illness and reduce the spread of illness in our schools.

Refer to the Spring Health and Safety Updates talking points to answer questions or provide information.

Included in the talking points is the following draft letter you may use in newsletters or to respond to concerned families or staff:

FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and we understand families and staff have concerns and questions. Our commitment is to provide students with the education and support to help them succeed while maintaining a safe environment for in-person learning.

Our layered prevention strategies have served us well throughout this school year, and are fully supported by the U.S. Department of Education and Northern Virginia Health Departments.

Vaccinations are available for school-age children five and up and are proven to reduce the severity of illness. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated or boosted.

Currently, masks are optional for all students, staff, and visitors. We encourage families and staff to consider wearing a mask when reports of COVID cases are high or if they or a family member is at high risk. CDC advises individuals to wear a mask when there is a lot of COVID in your community. See a full list of masking recommendations on the CDC website.

If Fairfax County transitions to high community level, FCPS will require all students, staff, and visitors to wear a face covering when indoors (except while actively eating/drinking) on school property (to include the buildings, school buses and other school provided vehicles).

In alignment with the Code of Virginia, the parent/legal guardian of any child enrolled in an FCPS school may elect for such child to not wear a face covering while on school property (to include FCPS buildings). No reason or documentation will  be necessary to elect for your child to not wear a mask.

One of the most important things we can all do is check for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to stop further spread from occurring. Employees are also advised to stay home and get tested when feeling sick.

The most up to date information is available on the Health and Safety Guidance Document webpage. If you have questions or concerns unique to your child’s situation, please contact your school.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our schools safe and healthy so all our students have the opportunity for engaging in-person learning.

Register for Dr. Reid’s Virtual Town Hall (May 17)

Dr. Reid will host a multilingual virtual town hall on Tuesday, May 17. Share the registration information with families and staff:

On Tuesday, May 17, incoming superintendent Michelle Reid, Ed.D. will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall, from 7 to 8 p.m. Register online.

Dr. Reid will be hosting additional engagement sessions throughout the county after her official start date on July 1. Stay informed about community engagement opportunities by visiting our website.

Spanish:

La Dra. Reid organizará sesiones de participación adicionales en todo el condado después de su fecha de inicio oficial el 1 de julio. Manténgase informado sobre las oportunidades de participación comunitaria visitando nuestro sitio web.

  • As we prepare for testing season, school attendance is crucial for your student's success and comfort.  Please plan any appointments and trips for non-testing days.  It is challenging for staff to accommodate many students for make-up testing and for the students, who miss instruction time for their make-up test.
  • Please remember, Monday, May 30, 2022, is a school holiday. We are eager to welcome your children back in school on Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

It’s officially May, when we are starting to look towards the end of library checkout. Librarians complete a full inventory every three years and that is happening late May & June, so I’m asking for your help to make sure that all student library books are returned to the Terra Centre library no later than Friday, May 20. This will give me a week to follow up about any lost or missing books before the county checkout ceiling date of Friday, May 27. As a reminder, we do not charge any late fees for books, but we will ask for families to pay the replacement cost for any lost or damaged books.  Sometimes we can make other arrangements such as providing a similar book to the library.  If your child has an overdue book on their account, please be sure to email Ms. Petruzzellis at [email protected] to make arrangements before any books or money are sent in. In the coming weeks, I will begin sending home electronic and paper notices so that parents can be aware of any overdue materials and begin to make arrangements. Thank you for all your support of the library, and your help with getting materials returned!

Terra Centre Families,

It is "plane" to see that our staff are out of this world and we had a great week celebrating! Thank you to everyone for the kind words, notes, and tokens of appreciation, we truly have the best families here at Terra Centre.

We are gearing up for our PTA Fun Fair that takes place on Friday, May 13th and we hope you all are able to come out and join us for games, food, and lots of fun!

There has been an increase in COVID-19 cases so it is important that your child stay home if they are exhibiting COVID-19 like symptoms. Additional information is below.

Please scroll below for current events, updates, and reminders.

Enjoy your weekend!

FCPS 2021-22 School Year Calendar

Stay Home When Sick

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) continues to monitor cases and report COVID-19 outbreaks, as outlined by the Virginia Department of Health. Currently, Fairfax County's Community Level remains low as determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our layered prevention strategies are being implemented based on our COVID-19 Community Level, as recommended by the CDC.

However, FCPS has seen a recent increase in COVID-19 cases and outbreaks and parents/legal guardians are reminded of the daily health screening requirement to check their students for mild, cold-like symptoms each day, such as fever, runny nose, cough, or shortness of breath. Parents and guardians are advised to keep their students home if sick and get them tested to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

VaxUp

We continue to encourage everyone to get vaccinated or boosted as soon as they are eligible. COVID-19 vaccination keeps children safely in school and childcare settings, and also while participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities. Strong community vaccination rates help keep our schools safe for in-person learning. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, or to find a vaccine provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Masking

As a reminder, students may return to school after five days of isolation if they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) individuals should continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others at home and in public for five additional days (day six through day 10) after the end of the five day isolation period. If individuals are unable to wear a mask when around others, they should continue to isolate for a full 10 days at home. While not required, wearing a mask while indoors is still considered an important way to protect yourself and others. Families are encouraged to discuss mask wearing as an additional layered prevention strategy.

Additional recommendations to prevent COVID-19 are available online.

Save the Date: Meet the Incoming Superintendent at a Virtual Town Hall May 17

On Tuesday, May 17 at 7 p.m., incoming superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will join staff, families, and students for a multilingual virtual town hall. Watch your email and upcoming issues of FCPS This Week for more details, including how to register. Dr. Reid will be hosting additional engagement sessions throughout the county after her official start date on July 1.

Dr. Reid held an in-person town hall May 3 that can be viewed on the FCPS YouTube Channel.

Terra Centre Families,

We want to send a huge thank you to our administrative professionals Ms. Ammar, Ms. Cunningham, Ms. Hart, and Ms. Sollers for all they do each and every day at Terra Centre. Their smiling faces are the first thing many families see when they enter the building and their caring attitude is what makes our school so great!

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week. Please take some time to thank our hard working staff with a handmade note or card, as these are always appreciated!

Thank you to our 1st grade families for a wonderful Panera lunch! It was such a treat to have a box lunch on Thursday and word around the hallways is that the cookies were delicious!

Our incoming superintendent, Dr. Michelle Reid, is visiting FCPS next week to learn more about our schools and community. Substance Abuse Webinars (April 26, 28) FCPS and Fairfax County Government Partnering to Provide Substance Abuse Webinars on April 26, 28

Due to the rise in opioid overdoses in the Fairfax Health District (which is consistent with national and state trends), Fairfax County Public Schools has partnered with Fairfax County Government to provide educational webinars on youth substance use trends and supports. The free webinars are scheduled for April 26, and April 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Both webinars will provide the same information.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Most commonly used substances
  • In-depth opioid information
  • Reasons why youth use substances
  • How parents can support their children
  • Available FCPS and Fairfax County Resources
  • How students, parents, and community members can connect with support providers

Registration for the webinars is available online.

  • Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong.
  • According to a recent student of elementary and middle schools, there’s a 5.8% difference between April and June attendance rates.  In struggling schools, the attendance drop is nearly twice that.  Let's work together to end the school year with success.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE?

  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.
  • Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
  • Ask for help from school officials, afterschool programs, other parents or community agencies if you’re having trouble getting your child to school.

Eid Mubarek to those in our Muslim community celebrating! Eid al-Fitr begins at sunset May 2 and marks the end of Ramadan. It is a time of receptions and visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. #OurFCPS

Administrative Professionals Week (April 25-29)

A big huge THANK YOU and HAPPY Administrative Professional Day to our Admin Staff - Mrs. Ammar, Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Gidoni, Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Lewis, and Mrs. Sollers!!

The TC PTA is only successful because we have these amazing people that support, encourage, and help us to flourish!  They take PTA calls, answer our questions, help us book our rooms for our events and allow us to do crazy things like drop pumpkins from the roof of our building.  Please take the time to say Thank You if you see them around school :)

  Teacher Appreciation Week - (May 2 - May 6)

I can easily forget the year my kids were born, but I will never forget the names of the teachers that helped me with my learning challenges while I was growing up in a first generation immigrant family.  The TC PTA takes the position that Teachers/Faculty should be celebrated all year around (and not just during a week) and therefore grade-level families have been hosting amazing monthly luncheons for them.  If you would like to do something for your teacher next week, we would encourage you or your child to write a Thank you card, send a Thank you Email, or give words of Encouragement to your Teacher next week because we know words have the power to encourage and bring people joy!

Terra Centre Families,

We have had quite the busy week and none of it would have been possible without our wonderful parent/family volunteers! We want to thank everyone that has been able to support our school by volunteering as a parent chaperone on a field trip, prepping and planting in our discovery garden, working at our book fairs, shelving books in the library, supporting our monthly staff luncheons, and all the many other  PTA sponsored events that have taken place this school year. We are so grateful for all of the continued support!

Our SOLs begin on Monday, April 25, 2022,  for students in grades 3-6. The schedule is posted below. Please ensure your child has a good night's rest and a great breakfast and brings their charged laptop to school!

FCPS 2021-22 School Year Calendar

This week we recognize those in our Terra Centre community observing Good Friday, the Friday before Easter. On this day of mourning, Christians observe the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus and what his suffering and death means for their faith. #OurFCPS @fcpsnews

New Years good wishes to our Theravada Buddhist community! Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” New years celebrations include a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly. #OurFCPS @FCPSnews

Terra Centre Families,

As we prepare to take a break and spend time with loved ones, we want to remind everyone to unplug and reconnect with one another. We have been on quite a journey and now is the time to share in each other's company. We have asked our teachers to not assign any homework over the break so students can disconnect from some of the pressures of the school day and enjoy some family activities.

Whether you are traveling or staying at home, we wish you a relaxing and restful spring break. We look forward to having students return on Monday, April 11th as we gear up for the fourth and final quarter of the school year!

Terra Centre Families,

Spring has officially sprung and we have seen an uptick in behaviors at lunch. Please review the following expectations with your children: students are to stay in their seats and raise their hands when they need help.  Students can  go through the lunch line one time for a meal and additional charges incur with each trip through the line. We appreciate your support in modeling appropriate behaviors at lunch!

The end of the third quarter is quickly approaching and that means that spring break is right around the corner! Next week will be a short week due to the 2 hour early release on Thursday, March 31st and there will be no school for students on Friday, April 1st. Spring break is Monday April 4th through Friday, April 8th.

We want to thank our 2nd grade families for a terrific luncheon last week. Our staff are so lucky to have such wonderful families.

6th Grade All County Choral Festival

Congratulations to our 6th Grade All County Choral Festival participants who performed under the baton of Michael Wu, the Artistic Director for the Strathmore Children’s Chorus. We invite the entire community to watch the premier concert on April 12, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. Channel 21 broadcast. Congratulation to the students below who represented Terra Centre Elementary School. And a special congratulations to Apryll I. who’s artwork was featured in the concert program! Thank you to our choral directors Mrs. Carla Okouchi and Ms. Vanessa Cuellar for sharing this once in a lifetime experience with our students and the community.

Terra Centre Elementary School Representatives:

Ruth B.      Jack G.     Apryll I.     Rebecca L.     Eyahel S.     Mieko W.

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after spring break. It’s time to break that cycle. Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.

As a friendly reminder, our tardy bell rings at 8:40 a.m. Students that arrive after 8:40 a.m. must be escorted into the building by a parent/guardian. Unexcused tardies can add up quickly, so it is important that your child arrives to school on time to start their day successfully.

Terra Centre Families,

We are excited to share a new resource that will soon be available to all Terra Centre students to support learning. All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.

Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions.

Please watch the following video to learn more: Tutor.com

FCPS 2021-22 School Year Calendar

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after spring break. It’s time to break that cycle. Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.

As a friendly reminder, our tardy bell rings at 8:40 a.m. Students that arrive after 8:40 a.m. must be escorted into the building by a parent/guardian. Unexcused tardies can add up quickly, so it is important that your child arrives to school on time to start their day successfully.

Family Engagement Survey: Participate Today!

FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey was emailed to all parents and caregivers on Sunday, March 13. If you haven’t taken the survey, please participate today! Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Collaboration with the community to see if FCPS is meeting its goals at the school, region, and division levels

The survey is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Amharic, Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, and Vietnamese. Take the survey now by clicking on the link below. Visit FCPS’ website for more information.

We are so excited to meet our rising Terra Centre Kindergarten families on Thursday, March 31st!

Please select a time below for your family to visit Terra Centre. Families will use the Kiss and Ride Lane alongside Burke Centre Parkway to drop Kindergartners off. Kindergartners will meet our kindergarten teachers and visit a classroom. Families will park in the main parking lot and enter through the front entrance. Families will have time to register for Kindergarten (we strongly recommend registering ahead of time), talk to a Kindergarten teacher, and tour the school.  At the conclusion of the tour, families will pick up their future TC Tiger from the Kindergarten wing. You will then be brought back to the front to meet some of our specials teachers before leaving.

We are looking forward to meeting our rising TC
