Important Information Purple Up! Day

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 17  for military children.

Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

✅ School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS School Health Services invite parents/caregivers to participate in a survey on the level of satisfaction with support provided to your school community by School Health Services. 🗳️ Nominations Open for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award

The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families. Read more about Dr. Bussey

This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on Tuesday, June 18.

Full details and the nomination information form are available on the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award webpage.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their child's teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

Thank you to Girl Scout Troop 52115 for the delicious Girl Scout cookies that they delivered to our teachers and staff! The troop collected cookie donations during their cookie drives to support the staff at Terra Centre!

TC Families,

This week was National Assistant Principals Week! Assistant Principals play a crucial role, and we want to recognize Melanie Jewell and Teresa Lewis for their hard work and commitment to our school, students, and the profession. These dedicated leaders work tirelessly to bolster teachers, motivate students, create a positive learning community, and face the many unpredictable challenges that land on their desk. Please join me in thanking them for their service to Terra Centre and FCPS!

April 4 was National School Librarian Day and April is School Library Month. It's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful and help develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs. Thank you to our school librarian, Allison Petruzzellis, for her dedication to our students, school, and community!

Please scroll down for important information and upcoming events.

Have a great weekend!

Important Information

Path of totality courtesy of nationaleclipse.com.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024, and (weather permitting) will be visible in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m. with the maximum eclipse around 3:20 p.m. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until 2044.

This is a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Terra Centre, we have acquired ISO 12312-2 approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse. If you would prefer for your child to stay inside or not receive glasses, please notify your child’s homeroom teacher by 8:00 a.m. on Monday.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Do not look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with Terra Centre’s dismissal), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your children to NOT look up at the sun unless they have the approved eyewear. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

For more details and family resources, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Attend a virtual information night to learn about Lexia on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will discover how FCPS is integrating this program into the classroom to support student literacy growth. Tips for supporting students at home will also be shared. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Register Today for the Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet School Lottery

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools — Hunters Woods, Bailey’s Primary, and Bailey’s Upper — provide enhanced learning programs in science, technology, and performing arts. Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open through Friday, April 12. Learn more about the schools, their programs, and locations.

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Learn About Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts.

If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.

Terra Centre Families,

It is hard to believe that last Friday was a snow day, and we hope you are enjoying the unseasonably warm weather today! Though temperatures will reach close to 80 today, we are still in the winter season. So when the cold weather undoubtedly returns, please remember to send your students with coats, hats, and gloves, as we typically have recess outside, even when it's cold. If there is winter precipitation in the forecast, please be sure to keep a close eye on the news and www.fcps.edu for any possible school closures or delays.

The Robinson Pyramid elementary schools are hosting a parenting course that kicks off on Tuesday, February 6 at Terra Centre with dinner and childcare provided. The course is free to families and most sessions are virtual. Please scroll down to view the flyer and weekly course topics.
