FCPS Updates

Breaking Down the Budget: Investing in Our Classrooms

Did you know that more than 85% of FCPS’ budget stays in our classrooms? Currently, 92.5% of FCPS staff are school-based, more than neighboring school districts. We are in the middle of FCPS’ annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback. Learn more about the proposed FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget and see the budget timeline.

🏗️ FCPS’ Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

The Fairfax County School Board approved the annual update to FCPS’ FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) at their regular board meeting last week. A CIP is a working budget document that shows the timing and costs of improvement to school buildings, such as renovations, additions, and new schools. Learn more about planned improvements. Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the CIP. Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

🐻 It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, between January and April. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us prepare and ensure we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Families should prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms on the FCPS kindergarten registration webpage. FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the kindergarten registration webpage.

✨ A strong start is Goal 1 of the 2023-30 Strategic Plan

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28

Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. Visit the FNS webpage for more information, including weekly request forms and deadlines.

We are excited to celebrate the 100th day of school on Wednesday, February 12.

Dear Families,

We will reach a milestone this Wednesday – the 100th day of school! (If we are not closed for inclement weather). Give your children a round of applause for all the learning, growing, and fun they've shared together. It's amazing to see how far everyone has come!

As we celebrate this achievement, we also recognize February as a month filled with opportunities for kindness and reflection. Valentine's Day reminds us to spread love and friendship, while Black History Month invites us to celebrate the rich history and contributions of African Americans. Let's embrace these occasions with open hearts and minds, learning from the past and building a brighter future together. Here's to the remaining school days being just as amazing!

As a reminder, FCPS schools and offices are closed on Monday, February 17 for the Presidents Day holiday.

To celebrate and honor Black History Month, students in grades K-6 wrote down how they can change the world with their words.

Dear Families,

Despite the groundhog’s prediction of six more weeks of winter, it seems Mother Nature has other plans! With a warming trend in the forecast, we hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the milder temperatures before winter returns!

As we move forward into the second half of the school year, a few important reminders: 2nd quarter progress reports will be sent home this Friday, so please be on the lookout. Additionally, we value your input! Our early release survey for K-6 families was sent out yesterday, and we kindly ask for responses by Monday, February 17. Your feedback helps us plan effectively for our students and staff.

Thank you for your continued support! Stay warm—or cool—depending on the day!

Proposed Budget Presented to School Board

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 23. Watch a video of the presentation

As Dr. Reid noted in her January 24 letter to families, “The budget is fiscally responsible and invests in excellence — not just for FCPS, but for all of us in Fairfax County who want a strong community with successful young people, dedicated educators and support staff, and a thriving economy.”

The proposed budget reflects the needs of and FCPS’ commitments to Fairfax County students, families, and community members. It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates.

Congratulations to Mrs. Gidoni, TC Principal, for being recognized as the FCPS Region 4 principal of the year! Read more on our website.

Dear Families,

Thank you to our 3rd grade families and PTA for a "spud"tacular staff luncheon this past week. Our staff really enjoyed the baked potato bar and goodies that went along with it.

February 3-7 is National School Counseling Week, and highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS. One way to show appreciation is to have your family draw or write our very own school counselor, Mr. Lammon, a note of thanks for all that he does at Terra Centre.

FCPS’ Proposed Construction Projects Offer Community-Wide Benefits

Fairfax County Public Schools’ updated plans for new school construction, capacity enhancements, and renovations are outlined in the proposed FY 2026-30 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Projects include constructing two new elementary schools; renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools; and relocation of modular buildings.

The proposed CIP was presented to the School Board at the January 14 work session. A public hearing was also held January 14. The School Board will take action on the proposed CIP at its Thursday, February 6 meeting.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

SR&R and Cell Phone Policy Survey

All FCPS families and middle and high school students have received an invitation to participate in a survey about FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R), cell phone policy, and cell phone storage options. The survey will be available through Monday, February 3. Please take a few moments to share your feedback and help FCPS make informed, inclusive decisions for all of our schools!

Tomorrow we honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dedication to equality and serving others. #MLKDay #OurFCPS

Dear Families,

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education. View Fairfax County’s Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our family liaison, MIchelle Sehwoerer Rodriguez at [email protected]. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

It’s hard to believe, but the end of the second quarter is fast approaching! This is a great time to check in with your child about their progress, celebrate successes, and set goals for the remainder of the school year.

As a reminder, Schools and offices will be closed tomorrow,  Monday, January 20, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday and Wednesday, January 29, for a Teacher Work Day.  See the complete school year calendar.

It was a chilly start to our week (albeit on a Friday), but our Kiss and Ride staff were bundled up ready to greet students and families.

Dear Families,

What a wintery start we've had! The snow days last week were an unexpected twist, but they also provided a cozy opportunity for students and families to enjoy some extra time together.

Now that we're back, we're ready to jump into the second half of the school year with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Our staff and students are already hard at work, and we’re excited for all the learning, growth, and fun ahead in 2025.

Thank you for your flexibility and continued support as we navigate the joys of winter weather together. Stay warm and safe, and here’s to a fantastic January!

Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to  Hannah Roukas, AART at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Hannah Roukas at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Partnering with groups like the Salvation Army, FACETS, Northern Virginia Family Service, and Second Story, we ensure that donated clothing reaches those who need it most. Through our efforts, we aim to create a charitable, more sustainable community—one donation at a time. Join us in making a difference! This month brings excitement filled with opportunities to celebrate our students' creativity and love for learning! Please read below to see the upcoming activities and events that will take place at Terra Centre.

As a reminder, our next 3 hour early release for K-6 students is on Monday, December 9. All K-6 families should have received an email with a link to document your child's dismissal. It is important that all families fill out the form in a timely manner to ensure all students are accounted for on this day.

Important Reminders

Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing <<fill in the name and email address of the AART>>.

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Ms. Roukas (Advanced Academic Resource Teacher) will be holding Full-Time Screening Virtual Office Hours to support any families with questions about full-time AAP referrals. Two sessions will be offered:

FCPS Updates

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

FCPS Cell Phone & Smart Watch Policy

As a reminder, FCPS usage policies for cell phones and smart watches are included below.  If your child brings a cell phone or wears a smart watch to school, please be sure to review the information below with them.

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Important Information from FCPS Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

With one week left, we need our amazing school community’s support to make this fundraiser a success! Right now, we’re only at 24% of our target and we know that with everyone’s help, we can reach it. Every dollar raised enriches the experiences our kids look forward to each year.

Many of you asked for a simpler fundraiser without the selling, tracking, and time  commitment of traditional events. We listened! This fall, our donation-based campaign is quick and easy for everyone. However, if we fall short, we may have to return to those “sell-a-thons” that pull you away from your evenings and weekends. Let’s keep it simple—if everyone pitches in, we won’t need to go back! https://www.givebacks.com/onboarding/causes/terracentrepta/campaigns/bad7ae7ec4

Here’s What Your Generosity Makes Possible

Recent donations to the PTA provided our students and staff:

  • Transportation for Field Trips
  • Hands-on learning experiences like incubators for hatching chicks from eggs
  • Enhancements to our Discovery Garden
  • Scholastic subscriptions for every class
  • Teacher supply reimbursements
  • Classroom technology charging stations

These are the experiences that bring learning to life for our kids! Whether it’s $50, $150, or $500, every contribution matters. If you’ve already donated, thank you! If you haven’t yet, please consider joining us in this final week. You can also help by sharing the fundraiser with family, friends, and coworkers.

Let’s finish strong and keep our focus on supporting our students—without the extra demands on our families. Together, we can continue making our school a fantastic place for every child to learn and thrive. Thank you for your generosity and community spirit!

With gratitude,

Terra Centre Elementary PTA

Braddock Supervisor Walkinshaw and FCPS School Board member Rachna Sizemore Heizer supported TC preschool and 2nd grade students by taking the Monarch pledge. They stopped by our Discovery Garden as well to see all the hard work everyone has done!

Terra Centre Families,

We hope to see everyone at our 4th annual PTA Pumpkin Drop and Movie Night tomorrow. The Pumpkin Drop starts at 4:30 p.m. and the movie will begin around 6:00 p.m. This annual PTA event has grown larger every year and it is a great time to support the school and spend an evening with your neighbors! (Dress in layers, the weather can be so unpredictable this time of year). This is not a drop-off event-all students must attend with an adult.

As a reminder, there is no school for students Monday, November 4 and Tuesday, November 5. We look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday, November 6.

Please scroll down to review important reminders and information.

Important Reminders Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Important Information from FCPS Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

PTA News Help us "rake it in" with our Fall Fundraiser!

We are thrilled to announce that we are launching our Fall Fundraiser, running from now through November 13th, with a goal of raising $22,000! This year, in response to your feedback, we are introducing a donation-only format making it easier than ever for you to contribute without the need for participation or volunteering—ideal for our busy lives! We believe this simplified approach will inspire greater involvement, and we’re excited about the potential for greater donations.

In previous active fundraisers, around 195 participants contributed approximately $19,000, which helped support essential initiatives such as experiential learning, classroom charging stations, and indoor/outdoor learning enhancements such as upgrades to the Discovery Garden.

By choosing to donate, you significantly impact and enhance the TCES educational experience. This year, we’re aiming for at least 230 participants to help us reach our goal of $22,000. We invite everyone in our school community to contribute, as every donation—no matter the size—brings us closer to our goal. Feel free to share the donation website link with friends and family.

Please consider joining the PTA. The number one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. PTA Membership
