We had a great time at our Military Family Game Night and Cookie Swap!

Terra Centre Families,

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

As temperatures drop, please be sure to send your children with coats and outerwear to keep them warm for outdoor activities.  Bringing these additional items to and from school means that the Lost & Found is growing!  Please be sure to label your student's items and encourage your child to check the Lost & Found for any missing items.

Rebecca Gidoni, Principal

Melanie Jewell, Acting Assistant Principal

I want to send a HUGE thank you to our Terra Centre family who came out in full support of our Fall Scholastic Book Fair! We met all of our sales goals, and put so many great books in our kids' hands! Even better, we raised a lot of money for our library which will directly put HUNDREDS of new books on our shelves for EVERYONE to enjoy! Thanks so much to every staff member, student, family, and parent volunteer who played a part! We look forward to seeing you again for our Spring Fair, which will happen the week before Spring Break! Happy Reading! -Allison Petruzzellis, Librarian

Hello Terra Centre Families!

We wanted to remind everyone that the Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be open Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Terra Centre Elementary School Library.  This is an opportunity for kids to shop the Fair with family and friends!  New this year, we have several tables of $3 and $5 book deals so you’re sure to find your next read or a great holiday gift!  All purchases directly benefit our Terra Centre ES Library which allows us to buy hundreds of brand-new library books each year!  We accept cash, credit cards, Scholastic eWallet, and even electronic payments like Apple-, Samsung-, and Google- Pay!  There is also an optional opportunity to visit the “Make a Wish Come True” display where you can grant “book wishes” by selecting and purchasing books from a teacher’s wish list (or gift certificates) for teachers to stock their classroom libraries!  We appreciate your support!

Thanks,

Allison Petruzzellis

Congratulations to our Terra Centre teachers nominated for 2023 FCPS Honors! Mrs. Parise and Ms. Downey are Terra Centre finalists!

Terra Centre Families,

You might have heard your student talking about Portrait of a Graduate, or POG. What is POG?  Very simply, POG is FCPS’ commitment to ensuring that all students have the skills to be successful today, tomorrow and in the future. POG is broken down into 5 important attributes:  Communicator, Collaborator, Ethical & Global Citizen, Creative & Critical Thinker, and Goal-Directed & Resilient Individual.  Consider how you, as an adult, use these skills to find success in your life!

Students use these skills in all school subjects, at home, in the community, with hobbies and interests, in future careers, passions, and relationships.  We’re not focusing on these skills as an extra thing, students will use these skills to learn all content areas in a deeper, more meaningful way.

How will students focus on these skills?

  • Learn about the skills, including what they look and sound like, and why they are important
  • Apply the skills as they learn in their classes
  • Reflect on HOW the skills helped them find success and WHAT they can do to grow

As a reminder, school will be closed from Wednesday, November 22-Friday, November 24. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, November 27

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms [TOMORROW or MONDAY or...]. Please be sure to return paper forms by Friday, November 17. The electronic form will continue to be available in SIS ParentVUE until January 2024.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and enter Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Provide Input on FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

Please join FCPS’ Chief Equity Office for a virtual meeting regarding the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Regulation. The event will be held on Thursday, November 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. You may register at this link.

Your feedback will help ensure that FCPS policies align with the school division’s mission and values. It will also help identify any specific considerations that need to be addressed for the 2024-25 school year.

Language interpretation will be available in Spanish, Korean, and Arabic. A Certified Deaf Interpreter will be available as well. Get information on the SR&R

Happening Tonight! Our 3rd Annual Pumpkin Drop and Outdoor Movie Night!!

Greetings Terra Centre Community!

Our 3rd Annual Pumpkins, Painting, and Popcorn event is this Thursday, November 2nd! This email has all the details you'll need. This is a major fundraiser for the 6th grade class and the PTA and was a huge hit last year!

The Pumpkin Drop will start at 4:30pm. Pumpkins will be dropped in order as they are brought. There will be a registration card when you deliver your pumpkin if your family wants to name their pumpkin or give it any last words. Adults will be dropping the pumpkins off the roof. Register for your pumpkin to be dropped and pre-order pizza here (pre-registration for pumpkins is recommended, but not required. You must purchase pizza in advance).

Popcorn, cotton candy, and more will be available for purchase! You must pre-order your pizza with the link above. We'll also have spirit wear available to purchase. If your child has completed 10 Acts of Kindness through Raise Craze by Wednesday, they'll get a free Terra Centre bag. If your child has completed 20 Acts of Kindness through Raise Craze by Wednesday, they'll get a free cotton candy at the event! (Please visit the Spirit Wear table to collect your bag and free cotton candy voucher).

The Outdoor Movie will start around 6:30pm. This year, we'll be watching The Super Mario Bros. Movie (PG). Families with blankets can sit in the front. If you have a beach chair (low to the ground), feel free to sit in the middle. If you have a big chair, please try to sit toward the back.

Painting: If you signed up for painting, please arrive a few minutes early to your session, and enter/exit through the Preschool doors (out by the basketball courts). Painting will be done in the art room. Be sure to time it so you don't miss your pumpkin getting dropped! If you are in the 6pm session, you'll have to drop your pumpkin before you do painting.

Bathrooms will be available in the school, but we kindly ask you to be courteous using them. Grown-ups are encouraged to go with their kids into the building. There are adult bathrooms near the office, and "kid-sized" bathrooms further down the hall toward the teacher's lounge.

Looking forward to an exciting event!

Trash or Treasure

This year Terra Centre students and families are encouraged to help keep candy wrappers out of the landfill. Help Terra Centre collect empty candy wrappers in our “Trash or Treasure” box in the main entrance of the school. These wrappers will be cleaned, sorted, and specially processed into pellets which can then be reused for many different new plastic products. Let’s help Terra Centre Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle this fall season. (Please only place empty wrappers in the box).

Tips to Help Keep Children Safe

The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) reminds parents and caregivers that it’s important to talk to your children about safety topics including:

  • What parents should know about their children’s plans.
  • Having a meeting spot in case of getting separated.
  • Establishing safe areas.
  • What to do if you are followed.

Visit the FCPD website for more details on how to discuss safety topics.

FCPS Buildings Benefit All Community Members

In addition to our students and teachers, we estimate millions of visits by students and community members to Fairfax County public schools. Most of the public meeting and recreational facilities available in the county are FCPS facilities. FCPS works with the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and with the Fairfax County Park Authority to ensure that school facilities and athletic fields are available to the public after school hours.

The 2023 Bond Referendum will be on the ballot in November. Vote on Tuesday, November 7. Learn more about registering to vote.

Terra Centre PTA News for October

Mark your calendars with upcoming October and November events! Last Friday, October 13th, we kicked off our kindness campaign through Raise Craze! This is our biggest annual fundraiser, and it's a unique way for us to raise money for Terra Centre while making an impact in our community. During this fundraiser, students ask friends and family for donations via the online Raise Craze platform, while "paying it forward" by serving others. The funds we raise go toward things like field trips, teaching supplies, digital resources, and charging carts.

We also have our 3rd Annual Pumpkin Drop and Family Night coming up on November 2nd. Students can watch their pumpkins drop off the roof, do a canvas painting inside (must pre-register for painting), and end the night by watching an outdoor movie. Get all the details on Pumpkins, Paintings, and Popcorn Night here!

Thank you again for everything you do, and looking forward to continuing a great school year!

Raise Craze

During this fundraiser, students ask friends and family for donations via the online Raise Craze platform, while "paying it forward" by serving others. It's a great way for us to teach our kids the importance of kindness and gratitude while raising much needed funds for things like field trips, teaching supplies, digital resources, and charging stations. Students will spend time serving, not selling!
