Dear Families,

As we approach winter break from December 23-January 3, we want to take a moment to wish you and your loved ones a season filled with joy, relaxation, and quality time together. Your continued support and partnership make our Terra Centre community a truly special place.

We are also excited to share that we are making strides in enhancing our school’s safety and security.  FCPS is installing new security cameras throughout Terra Centre's school grounds. This is part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and secure learning environment for all our students and staff. We will notify all families when the security camera installation is complete and operational.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year, ready for more growth and success together on Monday, January 6, 2025

Warm wishes for a wonderful winter break!

Terra Centre Families,

We want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make our recent events such a success. Our Book Fair Family Night, Art Night, and the PTA Reflections Showcase were truly special, and we could not have done it without the incredible efforts of our students, families, and volunteers.

To our students: thank you for sharing your creativity, talents, and enthusiasm. Whether you were showcasing your artistic masterpieces, participating in the Reflections program, or diving into new stories at the Book Fair, your energy and passion were inspiring to all of us.

To our families and volunteers: your support and dedication to these events did not go unnoticed. From organizing, decorating, and assisting during the events to cheering on our students, you were instrumental in creating such a vibrant and engaging experience for everyone.

As a reminder, there is a 3 hour early release for all K-6 students tomorrow, Monday, December 9.

Important Reminders

Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to  Hannah Roukas, AART at [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Hannah Roukas at [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

FCPS Updates

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

FCPS Cell Phone & Smart Watch Policy

As a reminder, FCPS usage policies for cell phones and smart watches are included below.  If your child brings a cell phone or wears a smart watch to school, please be sure to review the information below with them.

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

Student Feedback Opportunity for FCPS Cell Phone Policy and SR&R

FCPS is working with K12 Insight to host a community forum for families, staff members, and students to provide feedback on the school division’s cell phone policies and practices, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. FCPS is looking for more student participants (grades 3-12) to help ensure diverse perspectives from our community.

The community forum will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center. If your student is interested in providing feedback, please visit the Cell Phone Policy Forum registration page to learn more. Families must register their child by Monday, November 25.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Boundary Review Community Meeting

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 6:30-8 p.m., at Lake Braddock Secondary School Cafeteria.

Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available.

Our Kiss and Ride line opens at 8:20 a.m. and we encourage all families utilizing kiss and ride to arrive by 8:35 a.m. and have your child ready to exit the car to speed up the arrival process. Students arriving after 8:40 a.m. will need to enter at Door 1 and be escorted in by an adult to the front office.

As a reminder, FCPS schools and offices will be closed November 27-29. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! We look forward to welcoming students back on Monday, December 2

Our next 3 hour early release for K-6 students is on Monday, December 9. All K-6 families should have received an email with a link to document your child's dismissal. It is important that all families fill out the form in a timely manner to ensure all students are accounted for on this day.

Book Fair Volunteers Needed

We are beginning to plan for our Scholastic Fall Book Fair!  The library could not make it happen without the generous support of our volunteers!  We’re looking for help during school hours on Nov. 25-26 as we set up, preview, and make wish lists, as well as with book sales throughout the week of Dec. 2-6.  We’ll also need help in the evening on Dec. 5 for our Book Fair Family Night. If you’re available for one or more of these shifts, please click the following link to get to our Sign-Up Genius page to volunteer. This fun event gets our students excited about reading and we appreciate your support!

Threads of Hope Clothing Drive - December 2-13

Fairfax Threads of Hope, founded by three Robinson students, is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to supporting those in need in our local community. Volunteers regularly collect gently used clothing from the neighborhoods of Fairfax, Kings Park West, and Burke, giving these items a second life by donating them to local charitable organizations. Partnering with groups like the Salvation Army, FACETS, Northern Virginia Family Service, and Second Story, we ensure that donated clothing reaches those who need it most. Through our efforts, we aim to create a charitable, more sustainable community—one donation at a time. Join us in making a difference! Contact us for more information or to schedule a donation pickup (from wherever you desire) at [email protected]

Threads of Hope is hosting a clothing drive at Terra Centre from December 2-13. A collection bin will be in the front lobby.

Important Information from FCPS Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair

Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.

The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

PTA News Help us "rake it in" with our Fall Fundraiser!

With one week left, we need our amazing school community’s support to make this fundraiser a success! Right now, we’re only at 24% of our target and we know that with everyone’s help, we can reach it. Every dollar raised enriches the experiences our kids look forward to each year.

Many of you asked for a simpler fundraiser without the selling, tracking, and time  commitment of traditional events. We listened! This fall, our donation-based campaign is quick and easy for everyone. However, if we fall short, we may have to return to those “sell-a-thons” that pull you away from your evenings and weekends. Let’s keep it simple—if everyone pitches in, we won’t need to go back! https://www.givebacks.com/onboarding/causes/terracentrepta/campaigns/bad7ae7ec4

Here’s What Your Generosity Makes Possible

Recent donations to the PTA provided our students and staff:

  • Transportation for Field Trips
  • Hands-on learning experiences like incubators for hatching chicks from eggs
  • Enhancements to our Discovery Garden
  • Scholastic subscriptions for every class
  • Teacher supply reimbursements
  • Classroom technology charging stations

These are the experiences that bring learning to life for our kids! Whether it’s $50, $150, or $500, every contribution matters. If you’ve already donated, thank you! If you haven’t yet, please consider joining us in this final week. You can also help by sharing the fundraiser with family, friends, and coworkers.

Let’s finish strong and keep our focus on supporting our students—without the extra demands on our families. Together, we can continue making our school a fantastic place for every child to learn and thrive. Thank you for your generosity and community spirit!

With gratitude,

Terra Centre Elementary PTA

Important Reminders Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

PTA News Help us "rake it in" with our Fall Fundraiser!

We are thrilled to announce that we are launching our Fall Fundraiser, running from now through November 13th, with a goal of raising $22,000! This year, in response to your feedback, we are introducing a donation-only format making it easier than ever for you to contribute without the need for participation or volunteering—ideal for our busy lives! We believe this simplified approach will inspire greater involvement, and we’re excited about the potential for greater donations.

In previous active fundraisers, around 195 participants contributed approximately $19,000, which helped support essential initiatives such as experiential learning, classroom charging stations, and indoor/outdoor learning enhancements such as upgrades to the Discovery Garden.

By choosing to donate, you significantly impact and enhance the TCES educational experience. This year, we’re aiming for at least 230 participants to help us reach our goal of $22,000. We invite everyone in our school community to contribute, as every donation—no matter the size—brings us closer to our goal. Feel free to share the donation website link with friends and family.

Please consider joining the PTA. The number one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help your school. PTA Membership

Help us "rake it in" with our Fall Fundraiser!

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus

Eagle Scout Steven Richards identified a need at TC that supports accessible outdoor learning opportunities. Steven spearheaded a project to build and install accessible table beds in our Discovery Garden. TC is so grateful for this new addition!

Terra Centre Families,

We want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of effective communication between our school and our families. Open and clear communication is vital to fostering a positive learning environment for our students and listed below are some of the ways Terra Centre reaches out to families:

  1. TC Family Newsletters: We will continue to send out school-wide weekly newsletters highlighting important dates, events, and achievements. This is a great way to stay informed about what's happening at school.

  2. TC All Parents Course-Schoology: Our All Parents course in Schoology provides announcements, PTA updates, and monthly fliers from Terra Centre and the community.
  3. TalkingPoints: TalkingPoints is an easy and safe way families can communicate in their home languages with their child’s teachers for free. We will be using this platform to communicate with you about your child’s education and progress.
  4. Classroom Communication: Each teacher will share weekly updates about grade level content and upcoming events so you can stay engaged with your child's learning journey.

  5. Parent-Teacher Conferences: We encourage you to attend these conferences. They are a valuable opportunity to discuss your child's progress and share insights. First quarter conferences will be offered for all K-6 families.

  6. Emergency Alerts: In case of any urgent situations, we will use our automated messaging system, E-Notify, to keep you informed.
  7. Feedback Opportunities: Your feedback is essential. FCPS will be conducting surveys throughout the year to gather your thoughts and suggestions.

We value your partnership in your child's education and believe that strong communication can enhance their success. If you are not receiving our newsletters, please let us know so we can provide you with registration directions.

As a reminder, there is no school for PREK-6th grade students Monday, October 14th. We look forward to students returning on Tuesday, October 15th

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence. Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

The fourth goal ensures all students have the same access to opportunities, no matter what school they attend. This includes academics and other programs that inspire and engage students and allow them to explore their passions and talents. See how Goal 4 is being put into practice.
