Terra Centre Families,

We welcomed back our youngest learners this week in our preschool program! It was such a joy to see children back in the building! Our preschool team worked tirelessly to prepare for their return. Check out the team picture below!

Now that students are back in the building, please remember that school grounds are closed to the community during the school day from 8:30 – 4:00. As it’s always been during the school day, the fields, playgrounds, blacktop, picnic tables, etc. are closed to the community during school.

TC Spirit Week is next week! Scroll down for details. We also have details about our next library distribution.  Be sure to reserve your books this weekend for the next distribution on November 2!

Have a fantastic fall weekend!

A message from our Librarian, Ms. Petruzzellis:

Hi TC Families!

It was excellent seeing some of you for book pickup on 10/19. After running the program for the first week and getting an idea of how long it takes to manage this kind of program for hundreds of students, I came to the decision to run the program approximately every other week instead of every week. The main issue was not having enough time after the holds were placed to pull and prepare the books and bags, while still maintaining my regular schedule of going into classrooms and doing lessons with every grade level.  We are going to try out the schedule below which allows for 1 week in between when holds are due and when pickup occurs to prepare all the books. We ask that Kindergarteners do not request specific books, but rather continue to participate in our Mystery Bag program. Your help with sticking to these hold windows will greatly impact our ability to continue to run this great program!

As a reminder, instructions on how to request books online for grades 1-6 can be found here: https://youtu.be/JO-Hbn_IC5I.    To sign up for the Kindergarten Mystery Bag program, click https://forms.gle/QCPoZydvYxhfYDhY6.

Thank you,

Ms. Allison Petruzzellis

Paperless Report Cards in SIS ParentVUE!

With the approaching end of the 1st quarter, you have the option to “Go Paperless” which will allow parents to receive online progress reports/report cards.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless."

  • All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports.

  • If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to access PVUE periodically to check in on their student(s)’ attendance and to view progress reports at the end of each quarter.

If you have not yet created a ParentVue account, please contact our SIA, Dee Cunningham, at dmcunningham@fcps.edu. She can provide you with an activation code.   ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) ELEMENTARY CONTINUUM OF SERVICES

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of services at the elementary level. A video showing each level of service in action, as well as information about middle and high school services, can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics.

Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)

Level I services are provided to all students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Level I services includes teaching students to use critical and creative thinking skills to process content. It also includes periodic opportunities to use advanced academic curriculum throughout the year. Student responses to these lessons are used as part of the identification process for Levels II-IV. Parents may practice the nine strategies during family conversations and activities. Descriptions and videos of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Level II services are available for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 for students with strength in a specific subject area. The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV to extend and enrich in the subject area strength. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year. Multiple criteria are used to screen for this level of service and decisions are made at the local school level.

To have your student screened for Level II services, complete the AAP School-Based Referral Form available on the Forms page: https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Level III services are available for students in Grades 3-6 who are eligible for part-time direct services from the AART. Students are identified by a screening committee at the local school. The AART uses materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV in the four core subject areas through either a weekly pull-out class or weekly co-teaching model with the classroom teacher. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year. Multiple criteria are used to screen for this level of service and decisions are made at the local school level.

To have your student screened for Level III services, complete the AAP School-Based Referral Form available on the Forms page: https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Level IV services are available for students in Grades 3-8 who are found eligible through a central selection process. Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis.

Multiple criteria are reviewed to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. The countywide central selection committee determines eligibility for full-time AAP Level IV placement.

Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is held for students who are new to FCPS and have been referred
  • Spring screening is held for any FCPS-enrolled student who has been referred

Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held.

  • A referral form may be turned in during the referral window (beginning on the first day of school, ending on the published deadline)
  • Students new to FCPS may be considered for Fall screening and Spring screening
  • The referral form is available on the Forms page: https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893

Additional information about the holistic screening process and information used for screening can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Middle and High School AAP

Additional information about middle and high school services may be found on the Advanced Academic Programs web page:

Elementary Parent Information Meeting

Two parent information meetings will be held at local schools. A meeting about the continuum of services will be held at Terra Centre on October 6th at 9:30-10:30am or 5:30-6:30pm. A second meeting will be held to answer questions about the screening processes for part-time school-based and full-time Level IV services on October 29th at 9:30-10:30am or 5:30-6:30pm.

Terra Centre Families,

The 2020-2021 school year is off to a great start! Over the last two weeks, teachers and staff worked hard on building relationships and making our students feel welcome. They will continue to work on fostering classroom communities that support students with familiar routines, a safe learning environment and a variety of ways to demonstrate their understanding of the curriculum objectives.

We know that it takes a lot of effort, planning and patience at home for virtual learning to be successful, and we value your involvement and partnership. We appreciate the input, feedback, and many positive emails we’ve received! Your kind words have made such a difference, and we are truly fortunate to have an amazingly supportive school community! Together, we are stronger!

Finally, we would like to give a big shout out to our office staff, technology team, and custodial team! Our office staff has worked tirelessly to put together materials bags for all students, as well as handling new registrations and withdrawals and much more on top of their regular duties. They are truly the glue that holds us all together!! Our tech team has prepared, troubleshooted, and distributed laptops to over 400 students! SRS - Supporting Return to School Childcare

GovDelivery 2 months ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Fairfax County Office for Children will offer SRS (Supporting Return to School) programming for elementary age children this fall.  The SRS program begins September 8 and will be offered at 37 FCPS schools, including the following Region 4 elementary schools:
  • Centre Ridge ES
  • Keene Mill ES
  • Oak View ES
  • White Oaks ES
Open enrollment starts today and will be limited in order to maintain physical distancing and health protocols.

https://wjla.com/news/local/fairfax-county-will-launch-new-childcare-program-to-help-families-during-virtual-learning

Frequently Asked Questions About SRS

On August 14, Fairfax County announced the new Supporting Return to School (SRS) program developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and this year’s virtual return to school. SRS will provide full-day programming to support children’s active and engaged learning during the FCPS virtual academic day and will provide opportunities for children to explore, engage, relax and enjoy activities based on the program curriculum, The Great Outdoors: Road Trips Through the Americas.

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the program:

Who is offering the program?

The program is being offered by Fairfax County Government through the Office for Children, which provides educational care for students before and after school through the SACC program. OFC teachers will be staffing the SRS program.

Where will the SRS program be located?

The SRS program will be offered at 37 Fairfax County Public Schools, including 35 elementary schools and the Key and Kilmer Centers. Enrollment will be limited in order to maintain physical distancing and health protocols.

What are the SRS program dates?

The SRS program begins Sept. 8, 2020. As FCPS updates to online and in-person instruction occur, the program’s status will be reevaluated.

What are the SRS program hours?

SRS will operate Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate parents who are working outside the home or may need full-day services. All current CDC health and safety guidelines, including the use of face coverings, physical distancing protocols, and enhanced cleaning and disinfecting practices will be implemented.

How many children will be served at each location?

The program will be able to accommodate approximately 60 children per site. Each classroom will have a group of no more than 10 children who will stay together each day, along with consistent staff to support their online learning and in-person connections.

How will the program support my child’s virtual learning?

FCPS is working in partnership with SRS to provide professional development in virtual learning technologies for SRS staff. SRS staff will collaborate with families on an ongoing basis to align support for children’s virtual learning schedules and will provide a space conducive to supporting children’s learning during the academic day.

Will the program provide academic instruction?

SRS staff are employees of the Fairfax County Office for Children, not Fairfax County Public Schools. SRS staff will support children’s virtual learning but will not provide academic instruction. The program is not designed to replace or duplicate virtual learning, but to support it by ensuring students are able to access the FCPS academic day and have the technical support and engagement they need to succeed.

What health and safety protocols will be in place?

The safety of both staff and students in the SRS program is of utmost importance. The SRS program will follow current CDC health and safety guidelines, as well as guidance from the Fairfax County Health Department. Additionally, the following measures are in place:

• Students will be in groups of 10 or fewer per classroom.

• Students will stay together as a group the entire day with the same staff members.

• Scheduled cleaning of high-touch areas will occur throughout the day.

• No visitors will be admitted.

• A daily check-in will include taking staff and students’ temperatures and asking a series of health questions before staff and students may enter the building.

• Children and staff will be required to wear face coverings throughout the day.

• Physical distancing of at least six feet will be supported.

Can I still enroll my child if the SRS program is not offered at my base school?

Yes, regardless of your base school, you may choose to attend the SRS site that is closest or most convenient for you.

Are there any requirements for program eligibility?

Yes, the SRS program serves children in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Families must reside in Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax.

Do families have to be working in order for their child to participate?

No, the SRS program does not have a work requirement for eligibility.

Is financial assistance available?

A sliding fee scale is available for income-eligible families. Additional financial assistance is also available. Families who may need additional financial assistance or transportation should communicate their request when enrolling so that registration staff can best provide assistance.

Why is enrollment limited?

The SRS program has limited enrollment in order to accommodate full-day programming, as well as physical distancing guidelines, and to support additional health and safety procedures. The program is designed to help families with the greatest need, who may not have access to other resources, and to mitigate opportunity gaps that may widen without in-person instruction.

How is this program different from SACC?

The SACC program is not currently being offered. SRS will be staffed by OFC teachers and provide a safe environment for students to learn. SRS is a full-day program supporting virtual learning during the academic day, with a before- and after-school care component. When children in the SRS program are not engaged in their virtual academic school day, they will have opportunities to explore activities based on the program’s curriculum, The Great Outdoors: Road Trips Through the Americas.

May I enroll on a daily, weekly, or as-needed basis?

No, the program is designed to provide consistent care and support for children’s virtual learning on a monthly basis only. Students must be enrolled for the full five-day-per-week program.

May I enroll my child for just the academic school day if we do not need the before-and after-care components?

No, the SRS program is a full-day program providing support for children during the academic day as well as before and after care. When children in the SRS program are not engaged in their virtual academic school day, they will have opportunities to explore activities based on the program’s curriculum, The Great Outdoors, Road Trips Through the Americas.

Will meals be provided?

Yes, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack will be provided in conjunction with FCPS Food and Nutrition Services.

Will transportation be available?

County and FCPS staff will work to ensure that transportation will not be a barrier to families’ participation in the SRS program. Families who need transportation should communicate their request when enrolling.

Will laptops and Internet access be provided?

Students must bring their personal or school-issued laptops. Wireless Internet access will be provided at all SRS sites.

Can my child who has special needs participate, and will he or she receive specialized instruction?

Yes, all SRS sites will accommodate children with special needs. Additionally, the Key and Kilmer Center sites will specifically serve children and youth ages 5-21 with multiple disabilities. SRS staff will collaborate with families on an ongoing basis to align support for children’s virtual learning schedules and will provide a space conducive to supporting children’s learning during the academic day.

The 2019-2020 sixth grade class used their funds to pay for a mural on the TC playground. The artist, Lama Ali, is busy creating a beautiful and inspiring feature for the entire TC community to enjoy. Lama will guide us in creating our own masterpieces in her exciting, bright, and fresh style.
