Extreme Makeover-Custodian Office Edition! Our well deserved custodians received an office makeover complete with new furniture, decorations, and snacks! Thanks to all TC staff that volunteered, our custodians loved the new look!

Terra Centre Families,

Welcome to Fall!  As the weather changes, students will continue to spend time outdoors for recess, physical education classes, and fire drills throughout the fall season. We encourage families to send students to school wearing layers of clothing that has been labeled so items are found and not lost outside!

We will be sending all K-6 families an updated electronic form next week for our upcoming 3 hour early release on Monday, October 28th. We are asking all families to review the information and complete the form as soon as possible. We have been notified that SACC will now open for SACC PM students at the early release time of 12:25 p.m. on Monday, October 28th.

As a reminder, there is no school for PREK-6th grade students Thursday, October 3rd-Friday, October 4th. We look forward to students returning on Monday, October 7th

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence. Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 4: Equitable Access to Opportunities

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

The fourth goal ensures all students have the same access to opportunities, no matter what school they attend. This includes academics and other programs that inspire and engage students and allow them to explore their passions and talents. See how Goal 4 is being put into practice.

There are approximately 13,500 military-connected students enrolled in FCPS. One-third of our military families transition into or out of our district each year. Blue Star Welcome Week allows schools to welcome and connect with their military families. The goal is to create a sense of belonging and ensure our military families feel celebrated and welcomed into their school communities.

Terra Centre Families,

Our first 3 hour early release day for students was a success and we want to thank everyone for their patience and support to ensure that all students arrived home safely. Our next 3 hour early release will be held on Monday, October 28th, and we will send a new form for families to select their student's option for early release.

There has been an uptick in our kiss and ride line and as a friendly reminder to all families and day care programs, when entering Kiss & Ride, please follow Marshall Pond Road to Pond Spice Lane to Burke Centre Parkway and follow the entire loop to exit on to Burke Centre Parkway. Please avoid U-turns at the intersection of Pond Spice Lane and Burke Centre Parkway.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact a member of our clinical team to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

The General Manager of the Burke Apple Federal Credit Union, Vincent Baba, brought a generous donation of backpacks and school supplies for Terra Centre students! Thank you to the staff and members of the Burke AFCU for supporting Terra Centre!

Terra Centre Families,

Thank you to our families who were able to join us for Back-to-School Night this week! If you were unable to attend, classroom teachers have loaded their presentations on their Schoology Courses for you to reference. Additionally, there are supplemental FCPS Language Arts and Math presentations in the Terra Centre All Parents Schoology course.

As we approach our first 3-hour early release (12:25 dismissal) on September 23, we still have 53 families who have not completed Terra Centre's Early Release Monday Survey to confirm plans for 9/23 and 10/28. To ensure student safety, we need every K-6 family to respond. If you have not done so already, please complete the survey ASAP to confirm your plans. During this time, our instructional staff will be involved in professional development, so it's crucial that we have an accurate count of families needing supervision due to hardship so we can plan accordingly.

Students requiring adult supervision will be overseen by instructional assistants, school monitors, school staff, and/or central office personnel. More information on Limited Early Release Mondays is available on the FCPS website.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill. Parents will be notified when the drill is complete.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

Understanding the SIS Attendance Codes:

  • EXC-Excused Absence; Examples: student illness, death in the family, medical procedure, injury, temporary student or family hardship, etc.
  • UNX-Unexcused Absence; Absences in which student whereabouts are unknown
  • UNL-Unexcused Locally Absence; Absences where student whereabouts are known or supported by the parent, but administration or local policy still deems the absence unexcused Examples: student shopping with parent; student and family away for vacation; student participating in other non-school activities during school hours.
  • EXT-Excused Tardy; Student was not present in their classroom at the start of the school day (9:10), but has a valid reason for being late
  • UNT-Unexcused Tardy; Student was not present in their classroom at the start of the school day (9:10) for an acceptable reason
  • REL-Religious Holiday; Absence for religious holiday or cultural observance -parent notification required

Important Reminders

Challenged Materials Review Committees:

As detailed in Regulation 3009, principals are required to submit a list of individuals who are available to serve on a Challenged Materials Review Committee if a departmental committee is needed.  Names of two parents are required. Parents must not be employed by FCPS and contact information should be provided.

The list of potential committee members will be maintained at central office.  Names are randomly chosen to serve if a central departmental committee is required to review a challenged material. If you are interested in being considered, please complete the following form by Friday, September 27th:

Challenged Materials Review Committee

Forgotten Items:

To minimize classroom disruptions, we will no longer be making calls to notify students when an item is dropped off at the office.

If your child forgets their water bottle, lunch, jacket, homework, etc., we encourage you to email their teacher to inform them of the drop-off. Please be aware that teachers may not see emails immediately, as they are focused on teaching throughout the day.

To ensure a smooth process, kindly label all items with your child's name and teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Extra Clothes:

To help your child stay comfortable throughout the day, we recommend placing an extra set of clothing in their backpack. We do not have extra clothing items available in the office, and students often need a change of clothes after accidents, spills, or unexpected situations like wet playgrounds or split pants.

Having extra clothes on hand will save you a trip and ensure your child is prepared for any surprises.

Update Emergency Contact Information:

The 2024-25 Online Verification/Update (OVU) packet is available in ParentVue.  Please log in to ParentVue to verify your student’s emergency contact information.  Instructions and detailed information are available at the following site: SIS ParentVUE Online Verification/Update (OVU) Packet.

Parents should contact the school directly for data corrections that they are not able to update or submit a Parent Support Request ticket for technical assistance in ParentVUE.

Terra Centre PreK Program Still Accepting Applications:

The FCPS PreK Program serves students with a no cost, high quality, full-day preschool program here at Terra Centre Elementary School for students with a variety of economic and educational risk factors.

There are still spots available for 4 year olds at Terra Centre. Your family may qualify through the Virginia Preschool Initiative even if your income is higher than the 200% of the Federal Poverty Level information listed on the online application.  You can complete an application online  or call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish) for more information.

Cell Phone/Smart Watch Policy

As a reminder, below is the FCPS policy on Smart Watches and Cell Phones in elementary school. The following will be enforced at Terra Centre:

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
  • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.

Families can now easily give permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account. Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

  • Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
  • Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
  • Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.
  • Note: Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.

Limited Early Release Mondays

Mark your calendar for Limited Early Release Mondays in the 24-25 school year. Students will release 3 hours early on the following Mondays:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • November 25
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form:  https://forms.gle/ZX5JmxoykBz4rN9T9 by Monday, August 19th for each of your children who are enrolled at Terra Centre Elementary.  The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms.

Back to School Tasks

Before the first day, make sure you have completed the following:

Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar [add contact info] if you need a code.

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE

Update Your Contact Information

To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded.

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website

Prepare for Meals at School

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.

  • Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced Meals The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
  • Dietary Accommodations Starting School Year 2024-2025, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is implementing a standardized process for dietary accommodations to ensure the provision of safe and healthy food for our students. This form only needs to be filled out once while your student is enrolled at FCPS.

Please keep in mind the following information:

    • FCPS does not provide meals containing pork.
    • We offer vegetarian and vegan options for lunch at every school, every day. If your student needs pork-free or vegetarian meals (which do not contain meat, poultry, or fish but may contain dairy and/or eggs), you do not need to fill out a Dietary Accommodation form, as we have those options available at all schools. Please note that while FCPS is not a peanut-free kitchen, our peanut butter products are individually wrapped to prevent cross-contamination.

Moved? No Longer at TCES?

Our Voices, Our Future: Multilingual Learners Summit

All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit on Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School. The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.

This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students.  Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience.  A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.

Refreshments and light food will be served. Language and childcare services will be available.  All secondary level multilingual learners have been invited centrally from FCPS via email.  Registration is open for students, families, or staff planning to attend.
